Pre-Update Information
If you are currently running iPadOS 13.1 or earlier, please make an appointment at the SMARTdesk BEFORE you update!
Verify you are logged into iCloud and the App Store with your SHS Apple ID.
Before installing any updates, backup your SHS iPad to iCloud. If any issues occur during the update, data may not be recoverable if you do not have a backup. For more information on backing up your iPad to iCloud, see this support article from Apple: https://support.apple.com/kb/ph12520.
Check that your iCloud account has enough free space to backup your SHS iPad. For more information on managing iCloud storage, see this support article from Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht204247.
Check the free space on your iPad, and ensure you have at least 3GB free so iPadOS can download and install. If you do not have enough free space, remove content from your SHS iPad. Often, photos, videos, and games take up the most space.
Plug your SHS iPad into power. Note: iPadOS updates will not install if the battery is below 50%.
Connect to a wireless network. Note: The only way to update your SHS iPad is via WiFi.
Please note that iPadOS updates are often several gigabytes in size. Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, it may take an hour or more to download and install the iPadOS update.
Update Your SHS iPad
Tap the Settings app:
Go to General > Software Update
Your SHS iPad will check for updates. If an update is available, tap Install Now or Download and Install. Note: If you do not have the option to install an update, plug your SHS iPad into power. Apple requires the battery to be charged to at least 50% to install iPadOS updates.
If your SHS iPad has a passcode enabled, you may be asked to enter the passcode before the update can install.

Post-Update Information
Look for your school data. If data is missing, you may need to restore your iCloud backup from before the update. Visit the SMARTdesk for help with this process.
Some apps may need to be updated to work with the latest version of iPadOS. Use the Self Service app to check for updates or “Reinstall” apps.
Verify your SHS iPad is backing up to iCloud. Note: This is a manual setting. Go to Settings > Your Apple ID/iCloud Account > iCloud > iCloud Backup. Toggle the setting on if it is not enabled.
If you encounter issues, please email the SMARTdesk at smartdeskhelp@d125.org. We will see if we can troubleshoot any issues remotely, if not, the iPad will need to visit the SMARTdesk.
